Ningbo residents’ health level reached 33.21% last year

The results of the 2020 Ningbo residents’ health monitoring were recently released: the city’s residents’ health level was 33.21%. This means that out of every 100 Ningbo citizens aged 15-69, about 33 have basic health literacy, understand basic health knowledge and concepts, master the content of healthy lifestyles and behaviors, and have basic health skills.

 

Highest level of safety and first aid

 

From June to September 2020, the city organised the monitoring of residents’ health levels in 2020, covering 10 districts and counties (cities) in the city, with a total of 44 streets (townships) and 80 neighbourhood committees (villages), covering 6,500 household households.

 

The monitoring results show that the health literacy of Ningbo residents has the following characteristics: the health level of urban residents (35.84%) is higher than that of rural residents (31.29%), women (34.34%) is higher than men (32.12%), middle-aged and elderly people aged 55 and above is lower, people with chronic diseases (19.24%) is lower than people without chronic diseases (35.29%). The health level of people with chronic diseases (19.24%) was lower than that of people without chronic diseases (35.29%).

 

The levels of health knowledge, health behaviours and health skills were 48.21% for basic knowledge and concepts, 33.40% for healthy lifestyles and behaviours and 32.95% for basic skills.

 

The levels of the six categories of health issues, in descending order, were: safety and first aid literacy (65.37%), scientific health concept literacy (63.47%), health information literacy (46.33%), chronic disease prevention and control literacy (36.15%), infectious disease prevention and control literacy (29.96%) and basic medical literacy (27.29%).

 

Health among young people is higher than that of middle and old people

 

In 2020, the health literacy level of the city's residents has increased by 3.18 percentage points from 30.03% in 2019, showing an overall upward trend.

 

Monitoring results show that in 2020, residents in the 25-34 age group will have the highest level of health literacy; in 2019, residents in the 15-24 age group will have the highest level of health literacy. Comparative results show that the health literacy level of residents in the age group of 55 years and above is the lowest in both years.

 

In terms of health knowledge, health behaviour and health skills, compared to 2019, the level of health behaviour literacy of Ningbo residents in 2020 has increased the most, followed by the level of health knowledge literacy, and the level of health skills literacy has increased the least.

 

The monitoring results also show that in 2020, the literacy level of Ningbo residents in all six categories of health issues has increased compared to the previous year, with the greatest increase in health information literacy, followed by scientific health concept literacy, and in third place is basic medical literacy.

 

According to the report, the city will strengthen the health education and promotion work for key areas and key groups such as rural areas, chronic disease patients, middle-aged and elderly people, and increase the health education work in the areas of infectious disease prevention and control literacy, chronic disease prevention and control literacy and basic medical literacy, to improve the health awareness of urban and rural residents, to encourage urban and rural residents to develop healthy lifestyles and behaviours, and to effectively improve the health literacy level of residents to promote the construction of “Healthy Ningbo”.
