Recently, the 3rd Academic Seminar on the Protection and Utilization of Cultural Heritage of Wooden Architecture (2020) was held at Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum. Experts and scholars from well-known universities and scientific research institutions, such as Tsinghua University, Southeast University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Chinese Yuanmingyuan Society Garden and Ancient Architecture Research Association, Zhejiang Ancient Architecture Design and Research Institute, Beijing Qingcheng Ruixian Digital Technology Research Institute, attended the meeting and gave a speech.

This seminar is the first nationwide academic event undertaken by Ningbo Tianyi Pavilion Museum (Ningbo Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum) after its establishment. Tongfang Knowledge Technology Co., Ltd. conducted a live broadcast on its platform.

The participating experts introduced the research and protection achievements of ancient buildings such as the main hall of Fengguo Temple in Liaoning, Foguang Temple in Shanxi, and Wenfeng Pagoda in Xiangcheng, Henan. How the Baoguo Temple Hall carries out wood and stone research around the “Maritime Silk Road” and promotes digital protection and utilization is the focus of the experts’ attention. The Baoguo Temple Hall’s cypress origin is taken as the research object, combined with the Baoguo Temple Hall’s construction history, from the perspectives of technology and culture, to explore new perspectives of maritime exchanges between China, Japan and South Korea. And Baoguo Temple’s ancient architectural complex protection and exhibition promotion project is taken as another case, with the efforts to re-interpret cultural heritage from the perspective of value judgment, value interpretation, and value creation.

The seminar also attracted the attention of Kohei Komatsu, a distinguished professor of Kyoto University in Japan. He studied the cypress components of Baoguo Temple Hall, and believed that whether it is yellow cypress or red cypress, it has genetically different characteristics from the cypress in Honshu, Japan, and it is worth exploring. He recorded and broadcasted the video “Research on Cypress Used by Baoguo Temple Hall and its Down-ang” specially for the seminar.  In addition, foreign experts such as Sakamoto Tadaki, Director of the Department of Education and Art of Takenaka University Museum of Crafts, Naoko Kisawa, a researcher at the Institute of Cultural Assets in Nara, and Professor Han Dongsoo from Hanyang University in South Korea, also applied video methods to demonstrate the achievement in the field of ancient building protection in terms of shape and rule, construction techniques, and material.

During the meeting, the experts also announced the latest information about the phased results of the digital protection and utilization of cultural relics with the Baoguo Temple Hall as the core, i.e., the main hall wooden information database is about to be put into use, and the high-precision collection of the digital information of the Tang Dynasty classics has been completed. It will play a leading and exemplary role in the protection and utilization of the same type of heritage in Ningbo.

At the same time, the Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum will continue to carry out the research on the wood components of the main hall, from the perspective of building materials, to explore the exchange between the ancient Jiangnan wooden structure and East Asian architectural culture circle, with Mingzhou Port as the core and Baoguo Temple Hall as the representative.
