Blood Clam

Ningbo abounds in blood clams and the blood clams in Fenghua of Ningbo are of the best quality. They are fatty, nutritious and tasty, regarded as a delicacy by the locals.

Cultivation of blood clams in Fenghua dates back to over 1,000 years ago. In 809 AD, the Fenghua blood clam was made a tribute to the Court. As Ningbo is thousands of kilometers away from the capital Chang’an (the present Xi’an), it was a great labor for people to deliver the clams. People hated to do it. The magistrate of the Yue Prefecture appealed to stop it. In November 832, the Court issued an imperial edict, exempting people from the hard labor.

Modern medicine has proven that the clam contains 62.5% protein, 18 types of amino acids and vitamins of B1, B2, A, and C.
