Low-carbon development for a “bluer sky”

The day of June 19 is the “2019 National Low-carbon Day”, and the week from June 17 to 23 is the national awareness week for energy conservation.

Zero carbon emission at Meishan

At the Creation, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base of Ningbo International Marine Eco-technology City, the dark blue PV modules are neatly arrayed. In January 2019, the photovoltaics project of the base was approved and started the grid-connected system for power generation, becoming an important part of the construction of the demonstration zone of near zero carbon emission at the Meishan Port.

It is learned from the management committee of the Meishan Port, the demonstration zone project has recently passed the expert approval and has completed its official conclusion, resulting in the first near zero carbon emission zone in Ningbo.

According to the target, the Meishan Port will focus on the four major emission reduction fields of industry, construction, transportation and power. With the efforts in building the low-carbon energy system, reasonably controlling the energy consumption of terminal departments and actively construct the low-carbon industrial structure, it will strive to complete 70% of the overall regional emission reduction target by 2030, and build the island an internationally leading demonstration zone of near zero carbon emission.   

Then what is near zero carbon emission? According to a person in charge from the management committee, near zero carbon emission is more demanding than the low-carbon emission, and is more like the state of being carbon neutral. The implementation of demonstration zone of near zero carbon emission was proposed in 2015. And in 2017, the Meishan Port launched the construction of the demonstration zone.

Then why the Meishan Port? The leading industries of the port are mainly low energy consumption industries, such as the marine technology and intelligent equipment, modern financial innovation services, life and health, and eco-leisure tourism. In addition, the average carbon dioxide emission per capita at Meishan Port is about half of the national average, its carbon dioxide emission per unit of GDP is only one tenth of the national average, its comprehensive energy consumption per unit GDP is one fifth of the national general, and its proportion of the electricity generation by renewable energy against the total electricity generation is twice the national average, enabling the port to be in a good position to promote the green and low-carbon development.

All the newly introduced projects to the Meishan Port are embedded with the low-carbon concept. The bank power supply system of the port is under construction, and upon completion it will effectively reduce the ship emission of sulfur dioxide by over 90%. At the creation, innovation and entrepreneurship base, the green and low-carbon concept is reflected in the power supply management, the reasonable water resource utilization and the green architecture design, and the recycling of rain water has become a reality. The Meishan Marine Science and Education Park plans to build the “spongy campus” and plans to build the sea passage to reduce the energy consumption.

According to the plan, the port will, through the construction of a series of projects like the second phase of the Zhongying Wind Power project and the Sino-European International Ecological City, promote the building of the low-carbon eco-residence, the green economy agglomeration zone and the smart new town. In April 2019, the State Grid Corporation selected the Meishan Port demonstration zone as a comprehensive demonstration zone at the county level for the Ubiquitous Power Internet of Things construction.

Low-carbon traffic

“Each year, when it is the season for the red bayberry, the main roads leading to Cixi County and Yuyao County will witness traffic jams. The special bus lines for red bayberry picking, though unable to solve the problem completely, advocates the green traffic concept.” said Zhao Yejun, a bus driver from Ningbo Public Transport Corporation. Last weekend, the first “red bayberry picking bus” to the Sanqishi Town was launched, and this weekend, it will continue to provide the service.  

With the green development concept, the public transport has become the good choice for the local citizens in their low-carbon traffic. With the optimized bus routes and the featured lines, an increasing number of citizens are in favor of bus for traffic. “Since the beginning of this year, we have launched such feature seasonal bus lines as the mountaineering line, the holiday leisure line and the red bayberry picking line. Meanwhile, many bus routes have been newly added or optimized to improve the layout of the regular buses.” said Wu Ningfeng, Deputy-director of the Operation Management Department of Ningbo Public Transport Corporation.

“We choose to take the bus and the subway instead of driving private cars because we think we are making contributions to the bluer sky of the city.” said a Mr. Ma, who is working near the Financial Center of the Eastern New Town. “I learned about the opening of the micro-bus from my office to the subway stations, so now I only drive my car in holidays.” In early June, the micro-bus No.11 was optimized, realizing the zero-distance connection between bus and subway.

In addition to the short-distance and swift-turnover micro-buses, the public transport department is actively building the zero-transfer stops connecting the subway stations. With the newly added lines and the optimized ones, currently, the company has 134 bus lines that have connection with the rail transit system, accounting for about 70% of all the bus lines of the company.

Photovoltaics becomes “green engine”

Despite the rainy day, the photovoltaic plates installed on the roofs of the Hengkantou Village of Liangnong Town are well in work, transporting the clean energy to the village. This is the result of the installation of the new photovoltaic plates which have started the grid-connected power generation since the beginning of this month. The new plates are more sensitive to light and have a higher power generation efficiency, making it possible for the village to become immune to the weather factors.

“Two months ago, I rented my roof to the Jingxu New Energy Technology Co. Ltd., and they installed 20 photovoltaic plates on it. When the weather is good, they can generate 25 kilowatt hour and when it is rainy, they can generate six kilowatt hour.” Said Huang Shuifu, former director of the village. He was the first person in the village to try the on-roof photovoltaic plates. At his call, more villagers have participated in this “green project”.

Currently, there are now 2,016 photovoltaic plates installed in the village, with the installed capacity of 201.6 kilowatt, and an estimated annual power generation of 210,000 kilowatt hour, as well as a reduction of carbon emission of 756 tons. After the connection of the grids, the plates have generated 10,750 kilowatt hour of electricity, and even on rainy days, the daily power generation capacity is about 230 kilowatt hour.

As is expected, the Hengkantou Village will make a profit of 60,000 yuan through the photovoltaics. The integrated development of the photovoltaics system and the tourist route transformation has benefited the “red tourism” of the village.

According to Ningbo Power Supply Corporation of the State Grid, by June 19, the total installed PV capacity of Ningbo had reached 1.32 million kilowatt, and in the first five months of this year, the power generation capacity reached 332 million kilowatt hour.

Straw used as wood

“It is just like the wood, you can nail it. It will never bend or get mildewed, and its price is even lower than the ordinary wood.” This kind of special “wood”, created by Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, CAS, is actually mainly made of straw.

It is known that many people prefer the real wood or composite board for the furniture, and the products often boast of being “made of real wood”. However, with the increasing demand for wood, the growth rate of trees in forests is far from enough. In 2017, the wood import rate was already over 60%.

With the low-carbon life concept, the new “wood-like” material will become a new “rising star” in the market. Recently, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, CAS, has developed a new wood-like material by combining straw with plastic resin, which is immune to the affection of water and fire. According to Zhu Jin, who leads the R&D team, in cooperation with a scientific enterprise in Shandong Province, they have developed the new material with a high straw content of 80%.

The wood-like material has a longer duration than the real wood material, and will not fade or suffer from insect pests even over a very long period. According to Zhu Jin, with the further research and development and the market promotion, the wood-like material will soon put into market, thus reducing the excessive cutting down of trees.

Green architecture

Recently, the office building of the Peacebird Men’s Wear, located on the Academician Road of the High-tech Zone, is well under construction, and the overall style design is taking shape.

“As an important part of the green architecture, the PV installation and the sunshade construction will be completed by the end of this month.” said Zhao Gang, Technology Manager of the Zhehua Intelligent Energy Technology Development Co. Ltd., who is supervising the installation recently.

The office building, with the functions of office, R&D and creative display, will serve as the headquarters building of the company. With a total construction area of 75,500 square meters, the building will have five floors above the ground and three floors underground. The biggest feature of the building is that it adopts the green concept and constructed in accordance with the three-star standard for green architecture, adopting the 12 technologies including the solar energy PV system plus air-source heat pumps, the energy-saving electro-mechanic equipment, water saving, spongy city construction, the monitoring of carbon monoxide level, and sunshade devices.

“In accordance with the related requirements of green architecture, we have given some energy-saving suggestions to the designer. For example, instead of the traditional air conditioning unit, we suggest that the air conditioning unit with the magnetic suspension technology be adopted, thus the operation energy efficiency can increase by over 20%.” said Yin Jinge, who is in charge from the Green Architecture Department of Ningbo Huacong Architecture Energy Saving Technology Co. Ltd. The reduction of carbon emission is taken into consideration in such stages as the planning and design, construction material production, construction, operation and maintenance, disassembling and recycling. Among other technologies, the PV project is a leading force for carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking. In the 50 years of building duration, the total carbon emission reduction by the project will be 1.26 million kilogram of carbon dioxide, accounting for 31.53% of the total reduction.

According to the information from Ningbo Housing and Urban-rural Construction Bureau, in 2018, the area of the newly added renewable energy application in architecture reached 12 million square meters, with six new demonstration projects for high-star green architecture construction, and the area of the energy-saving transformation of the existing buildings stood at 502,100 square meters, over-fulfilling the annual target for architecture energy saving.
