Ningbo Rail Transit in service for five years

At 10am on May 30, 2014, Ningbo Rail Transit Line No.1 was put into trial operation, marking the start of the new metro era of Ningbo.

Then on May 30 this year, it is the fifth anniversary of the rail transit system in Ningbo. Over the past five years, the rail transit has not only greatly alleviated the transport pressure of the city with its role as the backbone of public transport, but has gradually brought about great changes to the citizens’ lives and even the whole city.

Green transportation

The rail transit system of a city carries the dream of one generation or even several generations.

On August 12, 2008, the “short-term development plan of Ningbo rail transit (2008-2015)” was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. Then on June 26, 2009, the first phase of the Rail Transit Line No.1 was launched, starting the construction of the rail transit project in Ningbo.

Then on May 30, 2014, the first phase of the Rail Transit Line No.1 was put into trial operation, and the dream finally came true. The launching of the first phase of the project has not only started the “metro era” of Ningbo, but serves as a powerful evidence to show that Ningbo has ranked among the modern metropolitans, marking a new stage for the city’s urban construction.

However, this is just the beginning. From May 2014 to March 2016, Ningbo had witnessed the new members of rail transit lines. On September 26. 2015, the first phase of the Rail Transit Line No.2 was put into use, marking the start of the “crossed framework” of rail transit. Then on March 19, 2016, the second phase of the Rail Transit Line No.1 was put into use, marking the full coverage of the central urban area of the rail transit system.

With the extension of the rail transit lines, the public transport system of Ningbo has transformed from the “kilometer era” to the “minute era”, and green transport has become the top choice for the majority of citizens.

The city’s disposition has been changed by the rail transit system, and the data concerned have become the best record of the new “metro era”. The total length of the rail transit line has increased from 21 kilometers at the beginning to 75 kilometers now, and the average daily passenger flow has increased from 80,000 people to 350,000 people. As the city’s backbone of public transport, the system has witnessed the riding of 440 million passengers so far.

Over the past five years, the rail transit operation mileage has reached 32.1062 million kilometers, an equivalent of about 803 circles around the earth. The train schedule of the Rail Transit Line No.1 has been adjusted for 18 times, and that of the first phase of the No.2, six times. When it comes to such festivals as the Mid-autumn Festival, the National Day, and the Spring Festival, the rail transit authority has made flexible adjustment and optimization of the schedule and taken such measures as extra trains and delayed shutdown time to satisfy the transport demands of the passengers.

To address the “last kilometer problem”, the rail transit departments concerned have been improving the connection and transfer network between the rail transit and the bus system over the past five years. So far, 129 bus routes have been optimized or adjusted, including 18 newly added micro-circulation bus routes connecting the communities, schools and townships (or towns) with the rail transit stations. A total of 22 transfer hub stations between bus and rail transit have been built. Over 70 bus stops have been added near the rail transit stations, and 71 connection points for public bicycles have been arranged.

All the above data are the reflection of the “temperature” of the city and the happiness of the citizens.


Service-oriented operation

With the concept of “sincerity, attentiveness, consideration and perseverance”, the working staff of the rail transit in Ningbo have innovated their services and have been well received by the passengers over the past five years.

For example, the special reservation service has been provided to the disabled passengers who travel alone. With a call to the service hotline number 83070000, the working staff of the related stations will provide careful service to the passengers.

This is just one example of the numerous featured service items of the rail transit. Since its opening, the first phase of the Rail Transit Line No.1 has conducted such activities as the “quality service month” and the “service for candidates for the entrance examinations to high schools or universities”, and has built a multi-platform, multi-form and multi-window service system. The eight featured service teams of the line have carried out over 160 featured service activities for the passengers in need.

Meanwhile, a number of service platforms have been launched. Such items as free med-kits, umbrellas, emergency chargers and food guides are evidence of the improved service details and the demonstration effect of the services have become clearer. In 2018, the “zero distance, zero time limit and zero regret” activity was carried out, as well as the “cleaning project”, the “smile project”, the “label cleaning and upgrading action”, and the transformation of the in-carriage dynamic maps. So far, the rail transit has received several thousands of commendatory letters from passengers.

Then on May 22, 2019, a piece of good new came that the same riding QR code can be used for the seven cities in the Yangtze River Delta area, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Hefei, Nanjing and Suzhou. That is, with the same “regional pass”, Ningbo citizens can take the metro trains of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wenzhou and Hefei.

Over the past five years, Ningbo Rail Transit has been upgrading and transforming its ticketing system, and a variety of new mobile payment modes have been launched, such as the UnionPay ODA, the public transport card, the QR code of Ningbo Metro App, the Tencent riding QR code, and the Alipay riding code. On September 22, 2018, the preferential transfer for rail transit and bus system was put into use, which has brought benefits to citizens, especially the public transport commuters. By the end of 2018, Ningbo Rail Transit had taken the lead domestically in terms of mobile payment for rail transit. For example, it ranks No.1 in terms of the variety of mobile payment modes, and ranks No.3 in terms of proportion of mobile payment, only next to Hangzhou and Shenzhen.


Metro manners

A range of metro manners tips can be seen everywhere at the rail transit stations, like “Please hold the handrail and watch your step safety”. The public welfare advertisement publicity of various themes also serves as a kind of special “bright scenery” of the city.

Since its trial operation, the rail transit has made it its target to “demonstrate urban civilization and drive urban civilization”, with the stations and carriages as the carriers of civilization.

A series of public welfare services, like the information inquiry, the airport boarding pass printing, the medical assistance, the information on employment, tourism and matchmaking, are provided at the rail transit stations with the help of the volunteers in red vest.

The Rail Transit Volunteer Service Team was established in May 2014, and so far there have been over 6,000 enrolled volunteers, with about 3,000 of them active at the stations. They have not only provided high-quality services to the passengers but have made active contribution to the spreading of the urban spiritual civilization. So far, the service team has completed a total volunteer service time of over 180,000 hours, with the longest service time for a single volunteer of 2,000 hours. The service team has been awarded as the municipal distinctive volunteer service organization and the provincial distinguished volunteer service team, and has been included in the “Good Persons List” of Ningbo and Zhejiang Province.

On September 6, 2018, the first Ningbo Metro Culture Festival as well as the 3rd “Metro Civilization” theme activity was held along the rail transit lines. During the three months of the theme activity, some special actions, including the survey of uncivilized behaviors on trains, the “civilization ambassador” flash activity, and the carriage civilization inspection, have been carried out to promote civilized riding. So far, all the 51 stations of the rail transit in Ningbo have become the “civilized windows for public service” and 13 of them have been included in the first list of the “civilized windows for public service” in Ningbo.

There is no denying that the civilized riding has become a fashion and the metro civilization has become a new symbol of Ningbo.


Bright future

The year of 2019 is the 20th anniversary of the founding of the new China. And it is also a special year for the rail transit of Ningbo.

It is the yearly target of the rail transit commanding department to put into trial operation the first phase of the Rail Transit Line No.3 and the first section of the intercity railway between the urban area of Ningbo to Fenghua District.  

The first phase of the Rail Transit Line No.3 is the north-to-south backbone of Ningbo’s rail transit network, with the Gaotang Bridge Station in Yinzhou District as its southern point and the Datong Bridge Station of Jiangbei District as its northern point. With a total length of 16.7 kilometers, this rail transit line contains 15 stations, all being the underground island-platform stations. As the first metro line of the second round of building plan of Ningbo rail transit system, the first phase of the Rail Transit Line No.3 will play an important role in Ningbo’s construction of the multi-central urban development pattern.

Besides, other major projects of the second round of the construction plan of Ningbo rail transit, the Rail Transit Line No.4, the second phase of the line No. 2, the first phase of the line No.5 and the Ningbo-Fenghua Intercity Railway, are being accelerated and well under way. The rail transit system of Ningbo is striding forward with an unprecedented “metro speed”. It can be predicted that with the coming of the network operation era of rail transit, the citizens of Ningbo will have more convenience in transport and the rail transit will bring about more good opportunities for the faster and newer urban development.

Then in the future, the rail transit will develop together with the urban construction and bring more wonders to the city.

Recently, the “five-year postcard” activity was carried out at 11 stations of the rail transit lines, and it made the citizens realize that the rail transit lines have so far been in people’s lives for over 1,800 days.

On May 30, 2014, with the first passenger swiping the passenger card, the first phase of Ningbo Rail Transit Line No.1 started its trial operation, making Ningbo the second city in Zhejiang Province to have the metro system.

Over the past five years, Ningbo Rail Transit, from line No.1 to line No.2, from 21 kilometers to 75 kilometers, has witnessed a number of life stories. With the ever increasing of operation mileage, the upgrading services and the increasing of the payment modes, Ningbo Rail Transit is depicting its “beautiful new life” in this vigorous city.
