The Forest Map of Ningbo Issued

With the coming of the country’s 41st Arbor Day which falls on March 12th, 2019, the Municipal Natural Resources and Planning Bureau issued “The Forest Map of Ningbo” for the first time. The map tells the citizens the lay-out of forest parks, natural reserves, wetland parks and wildlife in the city. 

According to the map, the city’s only national scenic spot lies in Xikou Town, Fenghua. The city is home to 4 national forest parks, including Shuangfeng Mountains, Siming Mountain, Xikou and Tiantong. Two national ocean parks are located respectively in Huaao Island, Xiangshan and Yushan Islands. Feishan Islands are home to the city’s only national natural reserve. Some endangered species, including Shaniodendron subaequale , Zhenhai Spines salamander, Cinnamomum daphnoides Sieb. et Zucc. and Isoetes sinensis Palmer, are also marked on the map. 

Stuff at the Municipal Natural Resources and Planning Bureau told the reporter that, “The forest ecosystem is an essential part of a city, and it is of fundamental and strategic value to elevating the city’s quality and living standards. We released the map to give people better understanding of the city’s forest resources, and encourage them to explore and enjoy the forests. We call up the whole society to do their part in tree-planting, protect the ecosystem, and build Ningbo into a beautiful garden.

According to the latest information by the Bureau, the city’s forest coverage remains at 48%, with plain plants covering 20%. The green coverage rate of the built-up area is 39.85%, the green land rate is 36.56%, with a per capita public green area of 11.5 square meters. The city’s forest resources are mainly located in 8 national forest farms, covering 300 thousand Mu on mountain peaks and islands. Statistics show that the quality of forests in national farms has recorded remarkable improvements from 2008 to 2018. The arbor forest reserve increased from 4 cubic meters to 6 cubic meters, and the forest coverage rate was 45 percentage points higher than the city average.

By the end of 2018, the city had built 56 forest towns and 186 forest villages at provincial level and 78 forest towns and 1001 forest villages at  city level, together with 28 natural reserves at provincial and national level. Ecological public welfare forest remained at 4 million Mu, 57% of forests in total. The city has planted more than 3.8 million precious trees, registered 6340 ancient and famous trees, and built 150 kilometers of coastal shelter forests.
