According to the report by Beijing Morning, a 30-minute "Turning out Lights" show was staged at Wang Fu Jing walking street on Sep. 23, during which, the lights for advertisement boards were turned out. On the same day, some residents also turned their home lights for 5 minutes to experience the effect of energy shortage. Some people take poor views of the show, regarding it as formalistic not problem solving at all. In my view, the show should not seen in that way as the significance of the show lies not in how much electricity it could save in just 30 minutes but in experience of energy shortage by people in the most direct way. I could remember clearly that several years ago, there was a electricity shortage prevailing over the country, The apparent reason for the crisis was the backward infrastructures while the root cause remained the shortage of the nonrenewable resources. During the electricity shortage crisis, many cities were forced to put forward electricity saving measures. However, those measures were put aside as soon as the crisis was over. In fact, electricity shortage has been never far from us as shortage of energy remains a basic reality of our country.
Some people often turn a deaf ear to the topic of sense of crisis. In fact, a sense of crisis is urgently necessary at the stage when the crisis has not come. If the crisis comes true, there will be no way to restore the homeland upon which we depend for survival. Effective measures must be taken to change the rough mode of production and the wasting way of consuming before it is too late.
