Veszprém lies in western Hungary. To the south lies Balaton lake, the largest fresh water lake in Europe and Budapest is 110 km away to the northeast. It is the capital of Veszprém megye (county) and a big city among county-level ones. The total population of this county is 386,000.
Veszprém is one of the oldest cities in Hungary. People lived here early in prehistoric period. Its history dates back to 4 B.C. or 3 B.C.. The most representative historical architectural complex is the Baroque Veszprém castle. After World War Two, the city began to grow and build universities, institutes, factories and so on. Due to its convenient location, wonderful environment and being close to the Balaton lake and the Bakony Mountains, it becomes a tourist center.
Veszprém has convenient transportation. No.8 highway goes across the city, connecting Budapest, Veszprém and Kormend, and No.82 highway converges Veszprém with Gyor here. The city is a shortcut to Austria’s Graz, thus connecting southern Austria and Italy. There are railways to Budapest. The communication is also quite developed including telephone, telegram, fax and mobilephone networks.
With the increase of population and development of trade and tourism, the original city infrastructure can’t meet the demand especially in summer. Now the stores and companies are increasing and the infrastructure is improving.
In addition to the developed tourism, commerce and trade, its other industries also have certain growth such as machinery, aluminum products, chemical industry, plastics, motor fittings, food processing, winemaking etc. The new industry zones are being built and the industry shows diversity in structure. Considering the factors of location, transportation and the preferential policies made by the municipal government, many big European and overseas companies have their branches here.
Veszprém has sound cultural and physical training facilities and one university, Veszprém University. The indoor swimming-pool, theatre, symphony orchestra, singing and dancing troupe, equestrianism club and all sorts of traditional folk cultural activities add the art atmosphere for Veszprém.
