 Ningbo University of Technology, formerly Ningbo College, was founded in 1983 and was confirmed by the Education Ministry in 1997 as a National Exemplary Engineering College, and it was approved by the Ministry of Education in May 2004 as a university offering four-year undergraduate education. Located in the central part of the city, Ningbo University of Technology covers an area of 42.6 hectares (256,000 square meters), and its building area is 204,000 square meters. Due to the further expansion of its programs, the University plans to construct in north Higher Educational Institution Zone a new campus with a total investment of 1.4 billion RMB, which will cover an area of 100 hectares (600,000 square meters) with the building area of 400,000 square meters. Ningbo University of Technology now has nearly 8,000 full-time students and a staff of over 700, 367 of whom are full-time teachers, including 36 professors and 112 associate professors. The University possesses more than 50 million yuan's worth of educational facilities and a library of 620,000 books. Ningbo University of Technology has set up 9 departments (Architectural Engineering, Electronic Technology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automobile, Transportation, Economic Management, Humane Studies and Foreign Languages Department). It also runs 2 education centers (the Adult Education Center and the Overseas Education Center). In addition, it has several scientific institutions with enormous potentials, among which are Three- Dimensional Technology Research Institute, Material Technology Research Institute and Architectural Design Research Institute. Since the mid-1990s, Ningbo University of Technology has been developing, in training students, a timely new mode of "One Leading Ability and Two Subsidiary Capabilities", which means priority is given to students one practical ability, while importance is also laid to its students' multi-and-foreign-oriented capabilities. The University has witnessed 12 specialties appraised as key ones by the state, by the Zhejiang province and by the Ningbo Municipal Government. And three are national exemplary specialties. In 20 years, the University has seen 13,000 graduates fully employed and favorably received by all walks in our country. With help of advanced teaching method and research facilities, Ningbo University of Technology makes remarkable achievements. So, the University is characterized by running the school with integrating all the three: teaching, production and scientific research. It runs 4 city-level leading laboratories, the Knife Die Set Center, the Network Engineering Technology Center, the Emulation Engineering Technology Center, and the Automobile Detection and Diagnosis Center, and some 40 engineering centers, among which are the Computer Center, the Advanced Manufacturing Practice Center, the Chemical Analysis and Testing. Meanwhile, Ningbo University of Technology has conducted many foreign co-operation programs. It pays much attention to foreign advanced experience, and emphasizes to build a school of foreign-oriented characteristics. The University has successfully cooperative relationships with 16 institutions of higher education in Germany, the U.S.A and others. And with the approval from the Education Department of Zhejiang Province, it has operated cooperative teaching programs with counterparts in Australia, the U.S.A., Malaysia and Germany. Ratified by the State Public Security Department, the Education Department and the General Bureau of Industry and Commerce, the university has also established the Ningbo University of Technology Overseas Service Center. The university has, in 6 consecutive years, received students from Germany, and has dispatched students to study in Germany. In addition, Ningbo University of Technology has been promoting information construction, thus gaining a characteristic of training information-oriented talents. The University has over 2000 computers, and is the first to establish the campus network in Ningbo and the center of the city's education and scientific research network. The network hardware plays the leading role in the city, and an integrated system of information for education, teaching and administration is formed in the University as well. Ningbo University of Technology has always been harboring its reform dynamics and deepening its reform initials in teaching, rare services and personnel allocation systems. The University is assigned to be the experimental unit in comprehensive reform of Ningbo higher education institutions. Since it has an early start to carry out double-level management(collegiate and departmental levels), rear services socialization, new personnel allocation and salary distribution system, information-based teaching management and students administration, the University has gained a very fruitful and satisfactory result.
