Zhengzhou, capital city of Henan Province, situated where the East, Central and West China joins, is an important hub of transportation and communications in the country and plays the role in connecting the economic activities of North and South China The city boasts convenient transport facilities, rich natural resources, brisk business and huge market potentials. It has under its jurisdiction 5 cities, 1 county and 6 districts, covering an area of 7446.2 square km and having a population of 6,627,000.
In November 1997, a friendly mission headed by Zhang Weiwen (Deputy Secretary of Ningbo Municipal Committee of CPC and Major of Ningbo), Chen Yong (the then Deputy Secretary of CPC Ningbo), Chen Taisheng (Vice Chairman of Ningbo People's Congress) and Lu Guorong (Deputy Mayor of Ningbo) paid a 3-day visit to Zhengzhou and signed the letter of intent on sister-city relationship between Ningbo and Zhengzhou. At the same time, Ningbo successfully held the "1997 Sales Exhibition of Ningbo's Brand Name Products and Symposium of Economic and Technical Cooperation" in Zhengzhou, which yielded total sales contract value of RMB880,000,000, and agreement on cooperation in over 10 projects including airline service between Ningbo and Zhengzhou as well as 178 letters of intent on exchange of personnel.
In October 1998, the delegation of Zhengzhou Municipal Government headed by Mayor Chen Yichu attended the 2nd International Fashion Festival of Ningbo and signed the agreement on sister-city relationship. On November 31st, the agreement was officially signed by the mayor of both cities, signifying a breakthrough in the mutual relationship of the cities.
