The city of Yinchuan covers an area of 3499 square km and has a population of 950,000, with 2 counties and 3 districts under its jurisdiction. The mainstay industries of the area are petrochemical industry, metallurgical industry, machinery, pharmaceutical industry and building materials. Besides, the rice, apple, mutton, lycium chinensis, licorice root, Helan inkstone, Ningxia sheepskin and so on produced here are world famous.

In 1984, the agreement on sister-city relationship between Ningbo and Yinchuan when the delegation of Ningbo Municipal Government visited Yinchuan. In ensuing November, the delegation of Yinchuan Municipal Government paid a return visit to Ningbo and signed the agreements on cooperation in 36 economic, technical and cultural projects. Since then, the cooperation between the two cities has yielded fairly good achievement mainly in the training and exchange of cadres, exchange of teachers, technical assistance and joint business undertakings. Typical of the results of cooperation are Yuyao Iron Alloy Factory and the three joint-venture projects launched by "Fenghua Buyun". In June 1996, the two municipal governments further signed the "Memorandum on Economic and Technical Cooperation", which ushered in a new wave of mutual cooperation between the two cities.
