Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province and a major city in Southwest China, is a historical city of national renown. It is also a major city of tourism an trade that serves as continental portal to Southeast Asia. The city covers an area of 21111 square km and has a population of 4,730,000.
In June 2000, the Ningbo delegation, led by Huang Xingguo, Secretary of Ningbo Municipal Committee of the CPC and Zhang Weiwen, Mayor of Ningbo, visited Yunnan Province. During the visit, leaders from the cities expressed the mutual wish to establish the sister-city relationship. The agreement on sister-relationship was signed at Xizi Hotel of Hangzhou when the delegation of Yunnan visited Zhejiang and Ningbo in ensuing October. At the same time, the Ningbo-based Zhejiang Kaikai Group Corporation and Kunming Huasi Beer Co., Ltd. signed the agreement on investing RMB84,600,000 in Kunming Huasi to raise its annual output from 50,000 ton to 150,000 ton. Ningbo Tourism Bureau and Kunming Tourism Bureau signed the agreement on tourism cooperation. In 2001, Ningbo and Kunming had agreed on 11 projects, involving capitals of some 4 million yuan.
