Guiyang, the capital city of Guizhou Province, is the political, economic, technological, educational and cultural center of Guizhou Province. It is also the important hub of transport and communications in Southwest China. It has 5 districts, 1 county-level city and 3 counties under its jurisdiction, with an area of 8,034 sq km, and a population of 3.200,000.

In May 1994, a delegation headed by Chen Shineng, Deputy Secretary of CPC Guizhou and Governor of Guizhou Provincial Government, visited Ningbo. During the visit, a letter of intent on sister-city relationship and close economic cooperation between Guizhou and Ningbo was signed by Liu Changgui (member of the delegation and acting Mayor of Guiyang) and Zhang Weiwen (then Executive Deputy Mayor of Ningbo). In ensuing September, the two cities signed the agreement on strengthened economic and technical cooperation when a delegation headed by Lu Guorong, Deputy Mayor of Ningbo, paid a return visit to Guiyang. In October 1996, Ningbo successfully launched an exposition in Guiyang featuring brand name products of Ningbo and a symposium on economic and technical cooperation, where 66 projects involving contract value of RMB124,420,000 were agreed on. Since then products produced in Ningbo have expanded their sales in Guiyang. In particular, some brand name products of Ningbo have set up monopoly shops and exclusive sales counters in Guiyang. Ningbo Lamp Shopping Mall, for one, is well known in Guiyang. In November 2000, the "Symposium on Economic and Technical Cooperation Between Guiyang and Ningbo" sponsored by Guizhou Provincial Government was held in Ningbo, where contracts or letters of intent on cooperation in 42 projects were signed, totaling investment amount of RMB1,075,000,000.
