Situated on the east coast of Eurasia and the southern tip of Liaodong peninsular in northeast China, Dalian, of quasi-provincial status, is the marine gateway of northeast China, North China, East China and the whole world. It is also an important port, and a trade, industry and tourist city. Under its jurisdiction are 6 districts, 3 county-level cities and 1 island-based county, with an area of 12457 square km and a population of 5,400,000.
In April 1999, the Dalian government delegation headed by Bo Xilai, Mayor of Dalian, paid a visit to Ningbo. The two cities then expressed their mutual wish to establish sister-city relationship. In ensuing September, the two cities signed the agreement on sister-city relationship when a delegation headed by Zhang Weiwen, Mayor of Ningbo paid a return visit to Dalian. The two cities have since carried out friendly cooperation and exchanges in garment industry, government cadre training and port operations.
