Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, is the hub of technology, finance, business and communications in Southwest China. It is also a historical and cultural city of national renown. It has under its jurisdiction 7 districts, 4 county-level cities and 8 counties plus a state-level development zone, with an area of 12300 square km and a population of 10,000,000.


In June 1997, a delegation of Ningbo Municipal Committee of CPC and Government visited Chengdu and held a trade fair and symposium on economic and technical cooperation in Chengdu. During their stay, government leaders from both cities expressed their wish to establish sister-city relationship. On November 11th of the same year, the two cities signed the agreement on sister-city relationship when a delegation headed by Wang Rongxian, Mayor of Chengdu paid a return visit to Ningbo. In 1997, the two cities concluded or signed agreements or memos on cooperation in 9 projects. In December 1998, the second annual meeting for cooperation between two cities was held, where agreements on cooperation in 11 project were signed. In the third annual meeting, agreements on cooperation in 4 projects were signed. In 2002, cooperation between the two cities exceeded 1 million yuan.
