Yuyao District is located in East of Zhejiang on southern bank of the Yangtze River Delta and belongs to Shanghai Economic Zone. It is 40km west of the international port city of Ningbo, 120km east of Hangzhou. It faces Hangzhou Bay in the north

and Siming Mountains in the south. The total area is 1,527 square kilometers. About 830 thousand people are living in 19 towns (townships) and 4 neighborhoods.

Since 1980s, the economic construction and various social sectors of Yuyao have been developed very rapidly. A new economic structure has been formed with the agriculture as the basis, with the industry as the pillar and the export production as the leading force. The economy of Yuyao develops at the rate of around 15% every year. In 2002, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the city reached RMB 18.5 billion and its financial revenue was RMB 1.81 billion yuan. Yuyao is one of the top 50 counties (cities) with the comprehensive economic strength among over 2100 counties (cities) in China. It has primarily formed the local industrial system with the electronic and electric appliances machinery and instrument, mold and plastic as its three major industries and fine chemical industry, electromechanical products and new material as its new leading industries. In 2002, the total industrial output was RMB 64.6 billion and the total industrial economic volume ranked fifth in the province.

The open economy of Yuyao develops at a sound momentum. In 2002, the export delivery volume reached RMB 13.2 billion and the self-operated export volume was USD 710 million. There are 17 categories and about 1000 sorts of export products. The electromechanical products cover 74.7% of the total export. The products are exported to 108 countries and regions. The business people from both at home and abroad come to invest in Yuyao one after another. Up till now, Yuyao has approved 849 foreign funded enterprises accumulatively with the total investment of USD 2.01 billion, registered capital of USD 1.2 billion and foreign investment of USD 901 million including 549 Joint Ventures, 36 cooperative ventures and 264 solely foreign owned enterprises. The investments are from over 20 countries and regions. Over 50 enterprises have been set up and put into operation in Far East Industrial Park, which is solely invested and developed by Taiwanese. The economic development zone, new industrial zone of north Yuyao and 16 township industrial parks are improving themselves for absorbing more foreign investment and achieving a greater success.
