Jiangdong is a central urban district of the modern international seaport city of Ningbo. Beilun Port lies to its east and the most thriving place, Sanjiangkou (three estuaries), adjoins in the west. Ningbo High-Tech Park lies in its north and Ningbo High Education Zone to its south. Jiangdong covers an area of 37.7 KM2., and has a residential population of 292,000. It is a new and developing science and technology industry and trade district. Jiangdong is the key area of the new round city planning and construction as Ningbo is expanding east and has gained the name of PUDONG IN NINGBO. According to the city planning, Jiangdong will be constructed as the administration center, central living district, and center of finance, science and technology, exhibition, medical treatment, sports and commerce of Ningbo.
Hu-hang-yong (Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo) Expressway, which cuts its way to Beilun Port (20 minutes to drive) through Jiangdong district and Tongsan Expressway, which adjoins major cities alongside China coastline from Tongjiang city of Heilongjiang province to Sanya city of Hainan Province, join together in Jiangdong district. It takes only 1.5 hours to drive to Hangzhou and 3 hours to Shanghai from Jiangdong. 36 km-long Hangzhou Gulf Bridge connecting Ningbo and Shanghai across the Hangzhou Gulf and with an estimated investment of RMB8 billion Yuan (about USD967 million), expected to be the world longest cross-sea bridge, will start construction by the end of this year and is to be constructed in 2006. After construction, it takes less than 2 hours to drive to Shanghai and Ningbo will be considered as a suburban area of Shanghai. Ningbo Lishe International Airport, about 20 minutes journey from Jiangdong, has direct flights to 29 main domestic cities and to Hong Kong and Macao. It also has charter flights for tourism to Seoul and Bangkok. Xiaoshan International Airport of Hangzhou is within the one-hour traffic ring.
