Beilun District, the biggest district in Ningbo, is on the shore of east of Ningbo. Its jurisdiction encompasses 9 towns. It covers an area of 585 KM2. on land and 258 KM2 in the sea. It has a population of 327,000, 52,000 live in the urban area of Beilun which covers an area of 12 KM2.

Beilun District is famous for its deep-water port----Beilun port. It plays a strategic role in opening up to the outside world of Zhejiang Province and Ningbo City. It is the important base of energy, raw material and export-oriental processing. In Beilun, with the approval of the State Council, there are Ningbo Economic & Technical Development Zone, covers an area of 29.6 KM2, Ningbo Free Trade Zone, covers an area of 2.3 KM2 and the Daxie Island which covers an area of 30.84 KM2, developed by China International Trust & Investment Corp., which can enjoy the same preferential policies as those of the Development Zone.
The reform and opening up to the outside world promote the development of Beilun. In 2000, its GDP hit 5.65 billion yuan, output value of industry reached 18.92 billion yuan, financial income 398 million yuan. The average income of each resident in the urban area reached 11898 yuan, each peasant 5148 yuan. By the end of 2000, there are 248 enterprises with foreign investment approved. The total investment reached USD 773 million, contract utilization of foreign investment reached USD 355 million. There are 19 projects with foreign investment more than USD 10 million. The total investment reached USD 5.07 billion. 120 enterprises have been put into operation. The volume of export reached 3.38 billion yuan in 2000. The large scale development of Beilun promotes the increase of local industrial economics. The local industrial structure includes machinery, magnetic material, electronic and electrical appliance, educational and sports products, clothing, food stuffs with more than 3,000 kinds of products.

JIANGNAN EXPORT PROCESSING & TRADE AREA
Jiangnan Export Processing & Trade Area is located at Xiaogang Town, Beilun District, Ningbo, in the middle of Ningbo and Beilun port. The Area was given the same preferential treatments as that practised in the state-level economic and technical development zones. It began in plot of development in 1992. The first phase witnessed the development area of 3.73 square kilometers, with the total planned area exceeding 10 square kilometers. 

The Area has a good transport service. Jiangnan, Tongtu and Luoxia highways run through the area. By the end of 2000, there have been over RMB 100 million Yuan fixed assets investment on the area, including over 40 million Yuan for infrastructure. In the Area, banks, post office, insurance and other institutions can offer the best services for enterprises. After several years of efforts, there have been a total of more than 60 enterprises of different kinds in the area. Accumulated investment totaled 600 million US dollars and committed overseas investment reached 400 million US dollars. Now settled in area are the investors from Taiwan Province, Japan, U.S.A., Singapore, Britain, Netherland, Thailand, etc. In which there are seven TNCs of Top 500 in the world invested in the zone, including the Dow Chemical Company from USA; Mitsubishi Corpration, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Itochu Corporation, Marubeni Corporation from Japan; Hoechst-Messer, Mannesmann from Germany. An industrial system has come into being with machinery, electronics, garments, stationery and chemicals as its mainstay.

Beilun Scien-tech Park
Situated in Beilun District of Ningbo Zhejiang, Beilun Scien-tech Park (briefly as BSP)is adjacent to Beilun Port, one of the four famous international deep-water transshipment ports in Mainland China. Covering a planned area of 2 square kilometers, BSP is located alongside Tongtu Road, the main line connecting Ningbo center.
