The main responsibilities of Ningbo Municipal Public Security Bureau are: 

1. To execute the state and provincial policies, laws, and regulations of the work of public security; to study and formulate related policies and regulations, and to guide the public security of the city.

2. To take charge of the cracking of the criminal, economic cases and the work of drug control, anti-drug, and anti-stowaway; to coordinate in the cracking of trans-regional and foreign cases.

3. To supervise and guide the security work of the government departments, enterprises, and institutions; to guide the organization of the security units of the enterprises and institutions of the city. 

4. To be responsible for the public security, household registration administration, and control of guns, ammunition materials, controlled knives, and other dangerous articles; to organize and coordinate the disposal of extraordinary security cases and emergencies;  to take charge of the administration of assemblies, mass parades, and street demonstrations. 

5. to be responsible for the administration of the preliminary inquiries of the public security stations, and the houses of detention. 

6. To guide and administer the entry and exit control. 

7. To guide the fire fighting of the city, to supervise the fire protection work of the city.

8. To be responsible for the administration of security cases of the frontier and coastal defense and inland waterways. 

9. To take charge of the security of computers. 

10. To administer the traffic control of the city; to be responsible for the disposal of traffic accidents; to ensure the traffic safety; to administer the automobiles and drivers; to be responsible for the traffic control of Jiangdong District; Haishu District, and Jiangbei District.
